The Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association (PMMI), in conjunction with the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) and the Processing and Packaging Machinery Association (PPMA), has released the 2024 Global Market Guidance Report. The report provides an in-depth look at the top global packaging and processing markets, focusing on market size, global trends, tariffs, import and export statistics, and changes in packaging materials and formats.
The report finds that from 2023 to 2027, most of the growth in this area will come from the Asia-Pacific region - and that growth will be quite significant.
According to the report, by industry packaging machinery, food continues to occupy the largest share of the market (about 40%), followed by beverages (about 27%) is not surprising. On the other hand, the pharmaceutical industry witnessed some of the fastest growth rates due to better access to health, prescription and social services in many markets, although food and beverages will continue to dominate.
The report highlights three "super trends" - sustainability, digitalization and smart packaging.
sustainable
Sustainability is underpinned by changing consumer expectations and shifting perceptions of and willingness to pay for sustainable products, according to the report. Packaging companies are increasingly developing products with circularity at their core. Globally, regulations will also play a key role, increasingly driving recycling and the use of greener solutions.
Taking coffee beans as an example, because the roasted coffee beans are very easy to deteriorate, it is necessary to use special materials to package them, but these packaging materials are often based on disposable plastic products, which will not only pollute the environment, but also cause a lot of unnecessary waste.
With this in mind, the founders of coffee brand PeakState believe that "compostable" coffee bags have broad application prospects. So he developed a reusable, refillable and recyclable aluminium coffee bean packaging. Compared with the general plastic packaging, this aluminum can packaging can not only be reused, reduce the waste of packaging materials, but also reduce the damage to the environment of non-compostable materials.
digitization
The report states that digitalisation will be a key driver for the packaging industry to achieve its growth and productivity ambitions. Digitalisation is not just about data and technology, it is also about creating measurable value by changing the way the packaging industry operates - from the factory floor to customer interactions.
Xiongxian Giant Packaging through the introduction of multi-functional digital printing presses, scanning packaging digital printing presses and other digital production equipment, not only greatly improve production efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and meet the needs of faster turnaround time, personalized and sustainable development.
Intelligent packaging
Digitization is also related to smart packaging, where technological developments will facilitate an increase in printed labels and codes, giving packaging a true digital identity and providing substantial added value.
With the help of digital technology, it is an important trend to present food labels by scanning two-dimensional code. This technology can expand the display layout of traditional paper labels and give consumers a better reading experience. At the same time, enterprises can display more content and carry out positive interaction with consumers.
It is understood that at present, more than 10 food enterprises such as Master Kong, Want Want, Mengniu and Pepsi have participated in the pilot work of digital food labeling, and the pilot products cover several major food categories such as dairy products, beverages, nuts, grain and oil.
